The Oxbow Lightscapes exhibition at Oxbow Public Market in Napa, CA features Napa-based artist Arleene Correa Valencia’s work projected via gobos onto the market’s floors and merchant screens when shops are closed. Chandra Cerrito / Art Advisors worked with Oxbow Public Market’s management team to help define this new gobo art installation program, select an artist, and oversee the artist’s design process.
This installation of five line drawing portraits illustrate the community of hardworking Napa Valley residents who help sustain a thriving Oxbow Public Market. In this work, Correa Valencia hopes to offer the viewer an opportunity to see beyond the wonderful products which surround their Napa experience, and challenge them to search for meaningful connections to the people whose contributions often go unseen.
Correa Valencia received her MFA from California College of the Arts. One of four children originally from Arteaga, Michoacán, Mexico, Correa Valencia is a beneficiary of DACA and is on a path to becoming a naturalized citizen of the United States. The Correa Valencia family fled to the United States in 1997 and found home in Napa Valley. Correa Valencia’s work is held in the permanent collections of the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, Crocker Art Museum, Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Grand Valley State University Museum of Art, Ulrich Museum of Art, and 21c Museum Hotels.
